Reduce input lag by identifying which part of the input-to-display chain is adding delay.

“Input lag,” “input delay,” “mouse latency,” and “keyboard delay” can come from different places. Windows is only one part of the chain. The device, wireless connection, USB controller, game engine, frame rate, display mode, GPU queue, monitor, and background load can all affect how responsive a system feels.

Understand the input-latency chain

An input travels from the mouse, keyboard, or controller through USB or wireless hardware, Windows, the game or application, CPU/GPU rendering, and finally the display. A delay at any stage can feel like “Windows input lag.”

Check refresh rate, frame rate, and frame pacing

Confirm Windows is using the intended monitor refresh rate. In games, stable frame delivery can feel more responsive than an unstable higher average FPS. Use appropriate synchronization settings for the game and display instead of forcing undocumented global overrides.

USB, Bluetooth, and wireless devices

If a mouse stutters or inputs register late, test another USB port, remove unnecessary hubs, check receiver placement, inspect Bluetooth interference, and verify power-saving behavior. A system optimization cannot compensate for a poor wireless connection.

Background load and drivers

High CPU usage, storage spikes, graphics-driver issues, overlays, recording software, and other background tools can add latency or stutter. Measure while the problem is happening.
